What Is an EDR — and Do You Need One for CMMC Compliance?

What Is an EDR?
Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) is a category of security software that monitors endpoints — laptops, desktops, servers — for suspicious activity, detects threats in real time, and gives you the tools to investigate and respond to them.
The “endpoint” part means it runs directly on your devices. The “detection and response” part means it goes well beyond what traditional antivirus does. Old-school antivirus compares files against a list of known bad signatures. If a threat isn’t on the list, it gets through. EDR watches behavior instead — how processes are running, what files they’re touching, what network connections they’re making — and flags activity that looks suspicious even if it’s never been seen before.

Level 3 adds requirements around advanced threat hunting, enhanced monitoring, and proactive threat detection — all of which presuppose a mature EDR deployment. If you’re operating at Level 3, you’re not just running EDR; you’re expected to have analysts actively working the data it produces.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint + Huntress is a popular and cost-effective combination for small contractors. You get solid baseline EDR from Microsoft and add managed threat hunting from Huntress, which fills the analyst gap that most small organizations have.
CrowdStrike is the gold standard in many defense environments and is widely recognized by C3PAOs. If budget allows, it’s hard to argue with.
Whatever you choose, make sure it integrates with your SIEM or log management platform. EDR that doesn’t feed into centralized logging creates gaps in your 3.3.1/3.3.2 compliance.

The bottom line: for CMMC Level 2 or Level 3, traditional antivirus alone is not enough. Assessors reviewing your System Security Plan (SSP) will look for evidence of behavioral monitoring, real-time alerting, and documented incident detection capability. Antivirus doesn’t provide that. EDR does.
Practical Recommendations
1. Don’t treat EDR as a standalone tool. EDR is most powerful when it feeds into a centralized log management system or SIEM. The logs it generates need to be retained, protected, and reviewable — which is a compliance requirement, not just good practice.
2. Managed EDR is often the right call for small businesses. Running EDR effectively requires someone watching the alerts. If you don’t have an in-house security analyst, look for a managed EDR solution (like Huntress) or work with an MSP that provides EDR monitoring as part of their service package.

5. Align your EDR selection with your broader Microsoft or cloud environment. If you’re already running Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Defender for Endpoint is included. If you’re building a CMMC-compliant enclave in Azure, that integration becomes even more valuable. Don’t pay twice for capabilities you already have.
